To spark meaningful change in educator preparation, the Ohio Deans Compact launched an Incentive Grant Program—an initiative designed to identify, support, and scale promising innovations across Ohio’s institutions of higher education. Through a competitive application process, selected grantees receive funding to reimagine educator preparation, strengthen P–20 partnerships, and better equip future educators to meet the diverse needs of all learners.
Xavier University’s Incentive Grant story exemplifies the power of this initiative. In partnership with Great Oaks Career Campuses and Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities, Xavier implemented Project SEARCH, a transition-to-work program for young adults with mild disabilities who have completed high school. The yearlong program provides three 10-week unpaid internships, enabling participants to build job skills, confidence, and independence while exploring career pathways on a college campus.
Project SEARCH also provides valuable opportunities for social connection and professional growth. Through the Exceptional Student Assembly social club, interns and Xavier students connect over campus events, shared meals, and monthly outings. These experiences contribute to a well-rounded internship that emphasizes workplace readiness, communication, and life skills.
The outcomes speak for themselves: program graduates secure competitive, long-term employment and gain the confidence to thrive in real-world job settings. With support from the Compact’s Incentive Grant, Xavier has developed a sustainable program model that helps young adults gain experience, prepare for the workforce, and successfully transition into their next chapter.
